The Ira F. Brilliant Center for Beethoven Studies,
San José State University
Open now through September 10
“Beethoven in Love” explores the continuing mystery over the identity of Beethoven’s Immortal Beloved and his some of his most important relationships with other women and male friends and acquaintances who enriched his life and assisted with his creative endeavors. The theme of love is also explored in his songs, the Ninth Symphony, and Fidelio.
Visitors will see enlarged reproductions of each of the 10 pages of Beethoven’s famous letter to his “Immortal Beloved” along with an English translation marked with clues to her identity.
Also on display are beautiful portraits of the three main candidates and many of Beethoven’s other close friends, accompanied by short stories about their connections to the composer. Rare engravings and color maps help visitors trace Beethoven’s journey in a postal carriage to Teplitz, the Bohemian spa where he wrote the Immortal Beloved letter.
Visitors are invited to cast their ballots at the Immortal Beloved Voting Booth and receive a free “Beethoven in Love” souvenir button.
