Falstaff mandato a “Casa Verdi” da Damiano Michieletto

Delle mie opere, quella che mi piace di più è la Casa che ho fatto costruire a Milano per accogliervi i vecchi artisti di canto non favoriti dalla fortuna, o che non possedettero da giovani la virtù del risparmio.

Così Verdi descrive la casa di riposo per musicisti anziani che fondò al tempo della composizione del Falstaff.

My Work and Worries in Music History

My profession is that of a music historian, and it is in this capacity that the Balzan Foundation has honoured me with this prestigious prize. The least I can do to express my gratitude, is to demonstrate here why the history of music seems a worthwhile pursuit to me, and what I have tried to achieve in it. But there are some massive doubts in my mind. Is it actually the case that music can have a history? What have I done to prove its validity?

L’umiltà degli studiosi seri non è comunque mai modestia, ma consapevolezza del fatto che i territori inesplorati che si trovano davanti a loro sono molto più grandi dei risultati che hanno alle spalle.

Another exemplar of the Eberhard Faber Blackwing 602. It’s an older version, but one that brings new questions:

This Blackwing belongs to what I call the “early” group, that is to say, those with a shorter overall length and whose imprint doesn’t have the stylized oblique logo. The gilt ferrule with black band suggests it was made a little later, but there is something unusual about it: a small notch at the end on both sides, which makes it a little easier to pull out the eraser:

This is the only Blackwing I’ve seen with this ferrule. In fact, I haven’t seen any other clamp-style ferrule with this notch in it. When was it made? I don’t know, but my guess is the 1940s based on the packaging, and that the clips which hold the erasers are consistent with the oldest versions. The imprint is unusually bright and foil-like…
